How The Pandemic Has Changed The Way We Workout

Why do I workout at home?

Rewind back to when the world shutdown back on March 23rd 2020 and we were told that everyone had to stay at home due to the Covid Pandemic, I unfortunately was back to work the next day, as my industry was classified as essential.

Two lockdowns later, my world had crashed around me, I felt like all my hard work over the past 9 months had been for nothing, there was no reward and no family time. There was nothing to look forward to, nothing to work towards, nothing to help motivate me through the next winter lockdown.

I voiced this to my best friend, another essential worker via a video message, where she was based over 5000 miles away in Texas, USA. Their covid restrictions were not as strict but she could relate to how I was feeling as we had both been working our socks off during the pandemic in our industries. She very kindly gifted me a three month pass to one of the best online gym communities, which she was also a member of and had been using doing the pandemic. I was able to work out from home with no or very limited equipment. I have never been a very big gym fan; however this platform was brilliant it gave me a purpose, a challenge, a goal and a direction to channel my frustrations. I would come home from working select a workout, log my timings and check out where I scored in the community tables.

Three years later and I am still a member of this online gym community and I still show up most days, I have a small collection of gym equipment, a couple of dumbbells sets, a few kettlebells, yoga mat and blocks, TRX kit and a fitness box. Throughout the years I have taken part in many of their online challenges and gained some fantastic swag for my hard work.

Still to this today, I would never have believed someone if they told me that I would be a regular gym bunny and would still enjoy working out, but here I am and I love logging into the platform each week selecting which days and which workouts I want to try to accomplish that week.

Working out at home is so much easier and more convenient for me, as a night shift worker the last thing I want to do is finish my shift and head to the gym, and the thought of having a sleep and then heading back out either before lunch or in the afternoon to workout just doesn’t appeal, I also like most have a huge list of jobs, and things I need to do during my downtime, like food shopping, housework, walk the dog, DIY, maintenance and gardening. The list is usually endless and the time available is limited.

Whereas working out at home you can fit a daily workout in that you can customize around the space you have, whatever equipment you have, how hard you want to work, what type of workout you want to do and however long you have available. The flexibility it has is amazing, there are hundreds of exercise videos that demonstrate movements, workouts, cooldowns, warmups and yoga flow, plus additional challenges throughout the year that help build consistency, take control and sustainable habits to track your fitness.

And do want to know the best thing the cost for three months averages out at the same price you would pay for only one month at an actual gym. If you want to find out more about this insanely amazing online gym community platform, drop me a DM and I would be happy to share their information with you.

I remember when I brought my first pair of dumbbells, I didn’t want to waste my money and last thing I wanted was for my shiny new dumbbells to arrive at my door and to my horror, be too heavy to lift off the ground. Knowing what weight to purchase was the hardest choice, as when you go to a gym you can choose from a large selection, until you find which ones are the best. I did my research and I knew the type I wanted to purchase (hex dumbbells) I needed them to be made of rubber and I didn’t want the circular kind as many of the work outs I do involve renegade rows and press ups. I have two pairs of dumbbells, a medium set of dumbbells to perform upper-body exercises and a light set of dumbbells that help train the smaller, naturally weaker muscles in my body.

I love using kettlebells as part of my workouts, they are so easy to use and the movement pattern is really fun. I have a small collection of them as part of my home gym and I’m now in a position to purchase another one of a slightly higher weight. I really like the design and feel of the York Fitness Kettlebells, I have never really been a fan of the metal variety and when you swing the metal ones I don’t like how they don’t hover/hang at the top of an eye level swing, they also seem to sway off balance on a swing if one of your arms is a split second faster or stronger than your other arm. Whereas the York Kettlebell is well balanced, hovers/hangs at the top of your swings and you feel you can do a release snatch without the fear of it travelling forwards through your window or TV.
